The alternative must do’s in Buenos Aires

In February 2017 I joined my mother on a 6 day trip to Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires was on my bucket list for quite some time. It was so nice to change the Dutch winter for the summer in the southern hemisphere.

Obviously, we dove into the history of Evita Péron, went to her grave at the huge cemetery Recoleta, visited Teatro Colón (without a performance, but with a guided tour), and visited the colourful neighbourhood La Boca, where there is a tango performance on every street corner.

But we also did some alternative things in this fantastic city. Here is a list of some more “unknown” must do’s in Buenos Aires:

  1. San Telmo Feria on Sunday
  2. Fuerza Bruta show
  3. Bicycle tour in the city
  4. The best (speakeasy) bar of South America
  5. Playing polo spelen on the campo

1. San Telmo Feria on Sunday

The San Telmo market, or: Feria de San Telmo, is every Sunday in the streets of the neighbourhood San Telmo. The heart of the market is in Plaza Dorrego, although it spills out into the surrounding blocks. There are many stalls on the streets selling antiques, souvenirs, art and relics. In between you can find stalls selling Argintinean delicacies. Everywhere is the sound of live music. It’s a very fun and busy place to be. You can easily spend hours here.

If you’re getting hungry, head to the indoor San Telmo Market, housing a lot of food stalls. It looks very similar to the Spanish indoor “mercado’s” where you can enjoy all kinds of specialties.

Tip: Do make a pitstop at Todo Mundo Club on the corner of Plaza Dorrego to see a tango-performance and the incredible interior.

Locations:
San Telmo Feria

2. Fuerza Bruta show

Fuerza Bruta is a spectacular modern show with lots of light effects, music, theatre and water. You don’t sit on a chair to watch the show, but you have to stand during the show. A huge part of the shows is taking place above your head, high up in the air. The acrobats literally fly through the sky. This is an amazing and unique show you should definitely experience.

3. Bicycle tour in the city

If you have read more blogs on TeppieTravels.com, you might know that I like to explore new places by bicycle; like Buenos Aires. I joined the guided bike tour “highlights of Buenos Aires”. You stop at many must-sees and the guide tells you many new things about the past of the city. Baja Bikes provides guided tours in many languages.

NB. Another great and fast way to get around this city is the Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus. Of course, this is a very touristy option, but you can explore the city very fast, see a lot while you’re on the move and also get information about the places you pass.

All information is on the website: https://www.bajabikes.eu/nl/buenos-aires-highlights-fietstour/
NB. There are a lot of tours available on the website, also for other cities in the world.

4. The best (speakeasy) bar of South America

Florería Atlántico looks like an ordinary flower shop, but if you knock on the door after closing time, you may enter. You go down the stairs to the basement, where you will find a very cool cocktail bar and restaurant. If you order the shrimps, you’ll get gloves so your hands don’t get dirty.

Fun fact: Florería Atlántico is on the 7th place in the ‘World’s 50 best bars’ list in 2020 and is the best bar in South America (again).

If you can’t get a seat at Florería Atlántico, Farinelli Arroyo, the small restaurantje next door, is also very good. The meat melts on your tongue!

5. Playing polo on the campo

Argentina Polo Day is situated a little outside the city. It’s a huge estate with lots of space. It feels like you’re in the countryside (“campo”). First, we watched a match played by some professional polo players, to see how the game works.

Then it was our turn to get on the horses and play polo ourselves. The game is not easy, but even without any horse riding experience, it’s so much fun just to sit on the horse and try to hit the ball.

After we had worn ourselves out on our horses, we enjoyed a delicious lunch in the shadows of the trees. We ended our day relaxing at the pool of the estate, so don’t forget your bathing suit!

I would have really loved to watch a football match in Buenos Aires, because this is supposed to be a real spectacle; the stadium literally moves on the movement of the crowd. Unfortunately there was no match when I was in Buenos Aires. So I have to get back to this beautiful city again!

For more inspiration for a city trip I’d like to point out my blogs about Barcelona, Tel Aviv, Rotterdam, The Hague, Tokyo, Singapore or Bangkok. Fancy a game after reading about playing polo? You might want to read my blog about Tejo, the national games of Colombia. If you prefer to play a game at home, take a look at my blog about the best board games to play at home.
