Tokyo – The biggest fish market of the world

Japan is an intriguing country. It doesn’t matter how busy the streets of Tokyo are, you won’t hear anyone yell or honking. There’s so much to explore in the city and the surrounding areas: from very interesting outfits to mysterious temples and beautiful geisha’s.

For me, Japan is still one of the most mysterious countries on earth and the main reason is that it’s very hard to really connect with the Japanese. It’s a very unique, but closed community.

Tsukiji fish market

Tsukiji was the biggest fish market in the world and is famous for its tuna auctions. The prices paid for the biggest tunas are sky-high. At the new year auction in January 2019 a blue-fin tuna of 278 kilo’s was sold for the record price of about 2.7 million euros (at the new location of the fish market). The auction starts at 5 am, so for this spectacle you’ll have to set your alarm very early.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t get tickets for the auction when I was in Tokyo in September 2012, but the fish market itself is also very fascinating. And I guess it’s no surprise for you that you can taste the freshest sushi over here.

Since we arrived at the fish market at 7:30 am, we had our first sushi at 10 am at one of the many sushi restaurants near the fish market.

In 2018 the fish market moved to its new location in Tokyo. It is not the location I visited in 2012. The new market is called Toyosu Shin Shijo (or: Toyosu New Market).
